Google Experimenting with Mobile Indexing First

In what is called as an “experiment” by Google, they have started indexing the mobile content first rather than desktop content. As the world moves more and more towards mobile usage it only looks practical that Google is carrying out such experiments. The rate at which mobile data usage is increasing one can expect a slowdown in desktop usage as people are looking for web access on the go.

This does not mean that Google are likely to ignore desktop content in place of mobile content. If a business has both desktop and mobile content then Google is looking at giving preference to indexing the mobile content of that particular business and in the case of not finding relevant mobile content it will fall back to indexing the desktop content. Even if both mobile and desktop content exist for a particular business then it is looking at indexing the mobile content first and then the desktop content.

A lot of emphasis has been given to mobile applications in recent times with the introductions of AMP and other mobile related technology. Search engine rankings are given a boost for website that has mobile compatible content. Google says they notice mobile searches to be increasing year by year hence they would like to scan the structured data of mobile first rather that desktop like it traditionally does. Websites that are responsive do not have to worry because they are already mobile compatible.

Webmasters can make sure that they have structured data for both mobile and desktop content. This way one can make sure they do not have any negative impact on their rankings. Presently it is unlikely that search results will be affected because of no mobile friendly content, however it might have an impact once Google decides on fully implementing this current experiment.
