That makes branded searches and AI Overviews a topic every business owner should understand, because the first thing people read about you may no longer be your own homepage. A good website design still matters, but it is no longer the only thing shaping how customers meet your brand.

Here is the plain-English version of what happened, what is still unknown, and four simple things to track so you are not guessing.

What Happened in September

First, two quick definitions:

Branded search means someone searches for your business by name, like “Adroitte” or “Nike shoes”.

AI Overview is the box of AI-written text Google sometimes shows at the very top of the results page.

Until recently, Google mostly kept AI Overviews away from brand-name searches. That changed in September 2026. Daily tracking published by DemandSphere, an SEO data company, showed the share of branded searches with an AI Overview going from about 26% at the start of September to over 80% by the end of the month.

The jump was sudden, not slow:

Through most of September, AI Overviews showed on roughly 27% to 35% of tracked branded searches.

On September 26 it hit 69.21%.

On September 27 it peaked at 90.48%.

By September 29 it settled at 82.06%.

Share of tracked branded searches that showed an AI Overview, according to DemandSphere’s September data. Early-September figure is approximate.

In a separate check, SEO consultant Chris Long, co-founder of Nectiv, tested 100 big brands, and found 93 of them showed an AI Overview.

Do Other Studies Agree?

Mostly yes on the direction, but the exact numbers differ. That is normal, because every company tracks different keywords in different ways.

Ahrefs studied 232.8 million US desktop Google results from July to September 2026. It found:

AI Overviews appeared on 61.3% of branded searches in July and 73.3% in September.

On September 29, the figure was 82.91%.

For non-branded searches, the September figure was 78.3%, so brand searches are now close to everything else.

In a separate check of 100 major global brands, Ahrefs found that 63 of them triggered an AI Overview by September 30. In 76.2% of those cases, the AI box sat in the first position on the page.

So the safe takeaway is: it is very common now, but the exact percentage depends on who is counting.

The Big Unknown: Are You Losing Clicks?

Neither DemandSphere’s data nor Chris Long’s test measured clicks. DemandSphere also only recorded whether an AI Overview appeared, not whether the brand itself was cited correctly inside it. And Google hasn’t announced any change that explains the jump.

Brand searchers are usually your warmest visitors. If the AI answer fully answers their question, some may not click. Others may click anyway. Until the data comes in, the smartest move is to watch your own numbers instead of trusting a headline.

Where Does the AI Get Its Information About Your Brand?

Ahrefs also looked at which websites these AI answers quote when they describe a major brand. The most common sources were:

Wikipedia: 71.9%

YouTube: 38.6%

LinkedIn: 22.8%

Yahoo Finance: 15.8%

Only 3.4% of the answers mentioned competitors. In other words, Google mostly tells your brand’s story using a short list of well-known sites, and your own website is not always the main voice. (This sample covered 57 measurable AI answers for large global brands, so smaller businesses may see a different mix.)

4 Things to Track Starting This Week

You do not need expensive tools. A simple monthly routine is enough.

A simple four-part tracking routine for branded searches in the age of AI answers.

Your brand clicks and impressions. In Google Search Console, filter the search queries to ones that contain your business name. Write down the clicks, impressions and click-through rate (CTR, the percentage of people who click after seeing you). A steady drop in CTR with steady impressions is the warning sign.

What the AI answer says about you. Search your brand name once a month and take a screenshot. Check the facts: services, location, pricing, founding year. If something is wrong, you will want to know.

Which sites it quotes. Look at the sources listed beside the AI answer. If it leans on your LinkedIn page, a directory listing or a video, make sure those pages are current and match your website.

What happens after the click. Watch conversions from branded traffic: calls, form fills and orders. Even if clicks dip, high-quality visitors who do arrive should still convert. If they do not, the problem may be on your site, not in Google.

What You Can Do to Stay in Control

Keep your facts consistent everywhere. Your name, address, services and pricing should match across your site, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.

Answer brand questions clearly on your own site. A tidy About page, a clear services page and a short FAQ give Google good material to quote. This is where solid website development pays off: pages that load fast and are easy to read are easier to understand.

Strengthen the sources Google already trusts. Complete your LinkedIn page, publish helpful videos on YouTube, and keep any Wikipedia or news mentions accurate and sourced.

Review your reporting setup. If you only track overall traffic, a brand-click drop can hide inside the average. A good digital marketing plan separates brand and non-brand results so you can see what is really moving.

Quick Takeaways

AI Overviews on brand-name searches jumped from about 26% to over 80% of tracked searches in September 2026, according to DemandSphere.

Ahrefs’ separate study found 82.91% on September 29 and a rise from 61.3% in July to 73.3% in September.

Nobody has yet measured how much this affects clicks, so track your own data.

Track four things: brand CTR, what the AI says, which sources it quotes, and conversions.

Keep your brand facts accurate on every site Google trusts.

Want Help Checking What Google Says About Your Brand?

If you are unsure what AI answers say about your business, or whether your brand traffic is changing, we can review it with you. Send us a note through our contact form and we will walk you through what to track.

If someone types your company name into Google, there is now a good chance an AI-written answer shows up before your website does.
