What the Latest AdSense Update Means to SEO

There has been a recent update by Google announcing that it is removing its three ad unit limit. The reason given by Google on the update is that they are looking at a balance between the content and the ads on the page. Before you jump the gun and start thinking that more ads mean more money and you can run any number of ads you want to generate income think the other way that too many ads on your page can kill your website.

Too many ads can really slow down a website with the number of scripts running on the page. The performance of the page can take a significant hit leading to slow download time and errors. This slowdown itself can lead to uncomfortable user experience. The amount of resource call dramatically increases with more number of ads in a single page. Resource call is the time get to the server and back every single time. One can simply turn off the ads in their pages and check for the speed and you can definitely spot the difference with the time taken by the page to load without the ads.

More number of resources to crawl can also mean that spider have a tendency to skip the page while crawling and move on to other pages. This is definitely not something any webmaster would like to happen in their websites. The reason behind spiders skipping their crawl is related to a process called “crawl budget.” There are no set parameters with the spiders crawl but when the spider have to take too many trips back to the servers for making resource calls it might opt out of the crawl process and move on to the other pages due to the number of resource calls and delays it faces in crawling a site.

These are some of the many drawbacks of carrying too many ads on your website. So it is important to choose wisely in spite of the relaxation in the ad limit policy by Google.
